Metropolitan Railway 1 and vintage stock at Quainton Road (photo by Martin Blunkell). Our Local Railways

Welcome to the local galleries pages, showcasing railways in our area.

A taste of the Metropolitan & Great Central Joint line

The railway through Harrow and Rickmansworth to Aylesbury has in many respects become a 'poor relation' of the other Chiltern Railways line through High Wycombe, but the Met&GC Joint line has much of interest - including Chiltern trains on London Underground metals and the popular 'Steam on the Met' events of the 1990s. In this gallery we show a sample of what it offers.

Local railway preservation locations

A look at some of the railway preservation schemes in and around our area - past and present.

Steam Specials on the former Great Western & Great Central Joint line

The line through High Wycombe has been fortunate to host numerous steam specials in recent decades, particularly the 'golden era' of the late 1980s. In this gallery we show the amazing number of different preserved steam locos that our members have photographed on the line.

Diesels galore on the former Great Western & Great Central Joint line

The introduction of loco-hauled passenger trains into London Marylebone has seen a 'real' train service on the local railways after a break of many years. This gallery includes pictures of the short-lived Wrexham & Shropshire service and shortly will have a section on the more recent Chiltern Mainline trains between Marylebone and Birmingham Moor Street. There are also pictures of freight services on the joint line, mainly the so-called 'binliner' rubbish trains to the landfill site at Calvert, and various unusual workings.

Maidenhead - High Wycombe and the Marlow branch

This gallery includes historic pictures of the Marlow branch line and the now-closed Bourne End - High Wycombe line, with an emphasis on the more unusual events.
