Welcome to the Marlow & District Railway Society
Founded in 1977, we are a group of railway enthusiasts based in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, and with members from the surrounding districts, including High Wycombe, Bourne End, Henley, Maidenhead and Twyford. Our activities include regular monthly meetings at the British Red Cross Society in Marlow, and outings to places of railway interest (see the club gallery pages for some examples). We also publish our own illustrated magazine The Marlow Donkey. Meetings are open to non-members, but why not join us?
Our next meeting is on Thursday 16 July when David Buerger tells us the story of London's Tramways through to the end of the traditional tram era in 1952.
- Sir Nigel visits the joint line: In a late change from the original plan, A4 60007 'Sir Nigel Gresley' worked through from Chester to Paddington via High Wycombe with the returning 'Cathedrals Express' on 6 June instead of being replaced by a diesel at Banbury. The steam loco had joined the outward working at Banbury in weather hardly worthy of June (see Tony Keen's photo above). The loco took water at Beaconsfield late in the evening when photography was difficult - does anyone have a picture for the Steam Specials gallery?
- Len Aldridge: The passing of 6007 along the joint line had a sad side, for it also saw the passing of our member Len Aldridge. A keen photographer of main lin steam operations, Len died at the lineside near Princes Risborough on 6 June. Our condolences go to his family and friends.
- Joint line gallery: There's a new picture posted on our gallery of unusual diesel workings on GW&GC Joint Line. It's a unique working from 1984. Further contributions from the archives are welcome.
- Swindon visit: Pictures from the society's visit to the Swindon Control Centre and STEAM museum are posted on our 2009 Gallery page.
